MONEY APPROPRIATED FOR ROAD

NORTH CAROLINA STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION JAN. 7,1958

The Board of commissioners of Swain County Adopted a Resolution on Feb. 1 that charged the N.P.S. has in the past diverted funds that has been appropriated by Congress and allocated for the Construction of the Bryson City Fontana Road through the G.S.M.N.P.

In 1953 Congress appropriated approximately $ 392,800.00 for the commencement of the project.

These funds appropriated by Congress were frozen for a while by the Park Service and then diverted to other National Parks according to the information of this commission.

Congress again made an appropriation for the beginning of the construction of this road in1959 session. This appropriation was for $ 725,000.00

These funds were frozen by the Park, then diverted to other Park project.

This action was taken even through this road was assigned # 1 priority as late as 1954.
